IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE TRAINING OF MASS COMMUNICATION STUDENTS

 INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The arrival of social media has greatly enhanced human communication. The new technology due to the participatory, interactivity and cost-effectiveness nature has barely made everyone who can use it a means of communication. This brings to realization of the prediction of Marshal McLuhan in 1964 that the world would someday become a “global village” where what happens in one part of the world would be known instantly and simultaneously worldwide.

Social media therefore plays a fundamental role in the field of Mass Communication including the training of Mass Communication Students in Nigeria. The fact justifies that social media has been taking place across the globe in recent times. The term social media, according to Ogedegbe (2016), is a large computer network formed out of some thousands of interconnected networks, and supports a whole range of services such as electronic, file transfer protocol, data base access and many others. It is therefore not surprising the success story behind the advent of the internet. It is also known as a network that links computers all over the world by satellite and telephone, connecting users with service networks such as Email and the world wide web (www).

According to Bittner (2019) said that history is somewhat not clear as to who deserved the glory of inventing still motion pictures, but that William Dickson and Thomas Edison were associated with the efforts to create motion pictures.

THE INFLUENCE OF BANKS CAMPUS STORM MARKETING ACTIVATION ON THE SAVING HABIT OF STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION
Today, the spending power of the youth has grown exponentially while their understanding of financial matters is abysmally low. Credit cards have become all too common among the youth and at the end of the month when they have to pay their bills, they are very confident about the fact that they can rely on their parents’ financially any time. Saving is ‘the excess of income over all expenditure’ where the expenditures are also mentioned as consumption, which is life contributions and insurance (if any), and the saving behavior is the money keeping activity after they use it for their own wealth (Denton, Fretz, & Spencer, 2011).

EFFECT OF TOBACCO ADVERTISEMENT AND ITS USES IN MOVIES ON YOUTH SMOKING HABIT

INTRODUCTION
1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In the United States of America for instance there are standing agreements with the cigarette companies to place their product in movies or television programmes but surprisingly, the amount of smoking in U.S. films has increased significantly since the settlement agreement was signed in 1998. In Nigeria today, tobacco advertisement remained one of the heavily prohibited product that could not be advertised in any of the media of mass communication.

In spite of this prohibition, some of these companies have stylishly advertised their product as can be visualized in the advertisement copy. Slogans such as “the Federal Ministry of Health warns that tobacco smoking is dangerous to health” or “smokers are liable to die young” is against this background that cigarette manufacturers have subtly entered the movie industries. Ostensibly to cynically promote the prohibited products. This is usually done in brand appearance through Act endorsement.

ASSESSMENT OF LEGAL IMPLICATION ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF BROADCASTING IN NIGERIA

 Introduction
The study of broadcasting regulation started to creep into the edges of the media studies curriculum. This wind of change should be welcomed, because it will aid the apprehension of the major forces that shape the communication environment. However, globalization in the face of specialization necessitated probes in sections of the society by scholars in the different areas. That is why media scholars cannot do without looking at issues as they concern media practices. An appraisal of the statutes of regulation of the Nigerian broadcast industry is pertinent at this period when the whole world is talking about digitization of broadcasting.

CHALLENGES OF NEWSPAPER MANAGEMENT IN INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) AGE

Introduction
1.1    Background to the Study
Technology has revolutionized all facets of communication during the past decades. Access to the people and information practically anywhere in the world has been quicker, cheaper and easier.
Awake (2002) cited in Kur (2004), The dynamic nature of the 2ls century and more centuries to come rests on technological revolution. No wonder, Marshall Mcluhan, a Canadian scholar in 1964 propounded the concept of “Global Village” regarding the entire global as having the potentials of becoming a global community where information and news about anywhere in the world would be readily available for anyone’s consumption in any part of the world.

THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA IN PROMOTING DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA

CHAPTER ONE
1.0              Introduction
1.1       Background to the Study
Access to information is essential to the health of democracy for at least two reasons. First, it ensures that citizens make responsible, informed choices rather than acting out of ignorance or misinformation. Second, information serves a “checking function” by ensuring that elected representatives uphold their oaths of office and carry out the wishes of those who elected them.
In some societies, an antagonistic relationship between media and government represents a vital and healthy element of fully functioning democracies. In post-conflict or ethnically homogenous societies such a conflictual, tension-ridden relationship may not be appropriate, but the role of the press to disseminate information as a way of mediating between the state and all facets of civil society remains critical. Buckingham, (2000).

ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN ELECTORAL PROCESS AND COVERAGE OF POLITICAL PARTIES ACTIVITIES

CHAPTER ONE
1.0       Introduction

In information-based society; the media have a disproportionately visible and influential role says International Foundation for Election Systems, (2011).
IFES (2011) added that democracy cannot exist in the absence of the press. This is because democracy is based on popular will and popular opinion depends on the public’s awareness and knowledge. It is the mass media that bridges up, promotes and propagates public awareness.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0       INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

It is obvious that the last half of the twenty first century witnessed a rival of radical political change that has swept across the frontiers of most modern nations of the world.  A result of this change is the emergence of socio-cultural variety and political pluralism. Nwosu, (2003).

The code should be read as a whole; individual principles should not be taken out of context. It is not, nor can it be under the First Amendment, legally enforceable.

THE USE OF INTERNET IN PUBLIC RELATIONS AND ITS IMPACT ON THE PRACTICE OF PUBLIC RELATIONS

Chapter One
Introduction
The Internet began impacting on our ordinary lives only in the late 1990s, with the development of the World Wide Web (Gillies and Cailliau, 2000, Giovannetti, et’al., 2003). Since then, the Internet has been used extensively for accessing instantaneous information and communicating across geographical boundaries. Due to its characteristics of speed, efficiency and economy, the Internet began to be applied increasingly across industries ranging from retail and banking to the media (Giovannetti et al., 2003).

THE ROLE OF MEDIA RELATIONS IN CORPORATE PUBLIC RELATIONS PRACTICE

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Media relations is the core activity in many public relations jobs (Wilcox, 2005). One of the participants of this study remarked, “Media relations has over the years become an increasingly significant profile and has added value to the business bottom-line”. To understand this strong link between the media and public relations, the researcher examined Grunig and Hunt (1984) view on how public relations originated.

IMPLICATIONS OF ON-LINE NEWSPAPER READERSHIP ON THE NEWSPAPER INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA

Chapter One
Introduction
In every human society that is ready for development and change, innovation is usually a lofty goal of inventiveness that has always dazzled the mind. Innovation is the introduction of new ideas, development and approach to ways of doing things. No matter how wonderful and inevitable an innovation may look however, not every individual or group will be ready to accept it with the same level of enthusiasm. There are those who are willingly ready for it, those who are hesitant about it, and of course those who are averse to it.
